Vocational Education and Skill Development among Children in Residential Care Institutions: An Analytical Review

Children in residential care homes are the most vulnerable section of society. They generally do not have the continuing educational assistance, the emotional stability or secure family conditions. Formal education continues to be a vital right and necessity, but it is not adequate to guarantee their seamless transition to self-reliant and productive adulthood. Here, there is a need of vocational education and skill development for the young kids to provide them with practical skills, employability skills and life ready.

This review study highlights the relevance, obstacles, opportunities, and policy implications of vocational education and skill development for children in residential care institutions. The current qualitative review study is based on secondary data sources such as scholarly papers, government reports and international policy frameworks. The analysis reveals that vocational

training enhances resilience, self-confidence, social integration and employability of children in institutions. However, numerous difficulties still remain such as insufficient infrastructure, shortage of competent personnel, obsolete curricula and poor relationship with the needs of the labour market.

It also discusses new avenues to promote skill-based education like government initiatives, public-private partnerships and digital skill platforms. Finally, it argues that vocational education programs need a holistic, multi-stakeholder strategy to maximise impact. This includes establishing greater institutional capacity, ensuring training is aligned to the needs of business and employing child-cantered ways to achieve meaningful gains. Finally, vocational education is a means of changing and reintegrating children in residential care into society.
